Restaurants across the city are planning excellent rewards for those who show off an “I Voted” sticker
Early voting began this week in Texas, , and on October 13, the first day, Harris County saw record turnout, shattering previous years’ totals with more than 128,000 people voting. Lines may be long, and voting might look different this year thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, but many Houston bars and eateries are continuing a longstanding tradition of offering free drinks and bites to those who vote.
It’s worth noting that it is technically against the law for establishments to offering free food and drinks to people who vote. However, restaurants can legally get around that by opening up the offers to everyone, even those without “I Voted” stickers. For those who do intend to vote this year, be sure to make a plan a head of time, check HarrisVotes.com for polling places and estimated wait times, and then hit up one of the Houston-area bars and eateries to reward yourself.
Brennan’s — Get an order of “ballot beignets” on Election Day when you present your “I Voted” sticker.
Dandelion Cafe — Get a free small coffee for voting anytime between now and Election Day.
Fat Cat Creamery — Get a free scoop upgrade at this Heights-area ice cream shop when you show that you voted, and maybe get a cool sticker too.
H Town Restaurant Group — This group behind Hugo’s, Caracol and Xochi will offer a choice of one margarita to voters. Try the Margarita Roja, made with Campari, the Coco Margarita, with coconut milk and coconut liquor, or the Margarita Azul, with blue Curacao
Michael’s Cookie Jar — Reward yourself for voting with a free oven-fresh cookie now through Election Day when you show your “I Voted” sticker or poll receipt.
Phat Eatery — Get a free order of roti with curry dip when you complete your civic duty, now through Election Day.
Sticky’s Chicken — Get two free chicken wings of any flavor, including Original Sticky’s, Smoke Shallot Glazed, Asian Tingz Dry Rub and the new S.L.A.B. (Sweet, Loud and Bangin’) flavor with honey and sriracha, when you show proof from the polls.
Underbelly Hospitality — Get a free appetizer at one of Underbelly’s four restaurants when you can show that you voted: hummus and pita at One Fifth Houston, People’s Choice Championship Queso at Hay Merchant, bacon sausage and hash browns at Georgia James, or pork dumplings at UB Preserv.
Under the Volcano — This Rice Village bar continues its long-standing tradition of giving a free drink on Election Day to anyone who voted, even if you early vote — just be sure to save your sticker or receipt.
Urban Eats — Get a $5 biscuit breakfast sandwich and a free coffee with voting receipt or sticker. This offer is valid through November 6.
