Two Beloved West Coast Food Trucks Are Headed to Houston

Compton’s Trap Kitchen and Fontana’s Don Fuego’s bring distinct takes on chicken sandwiches to Space City

Two wildly popular West Coast food trucks will soon be opening locations in Houston.

Don Fuegos, a truck serving up extra-crispy Nashville hot chicken, first teased their upcoming Houston truck in an Instagram post last month. And Trap Kitchen, a Black-owned food truck serving up fried seafood po’boys, juicy burgers and parmesan chicken sandwiches, also announced an impending Houston move on Insta a week ago.

Don Fuegos, which is based in Fontana, California, has a loyal following thanks to its crispy-skinned hot chicken, which is served as tenders, in sliders, and as a topping on the loaded Fuego Fries. No word yet on when the Houston truck will be arriving, or where it’ll be stationed, but in a reply to an Instagram comment yesterday, the truck’s management hinted that its arrival could be as soon as a few weeks from now.

When it does arrive, it’ll be yet another addition to the city’s growing collection of Nashville-style hot chicken restaurants.

Meanwhile, the owners of Trap Kitchen, based in Los Angeles, launched an entire Instagram page for its upcoming Houston location. The timing of that truck’s arrival has yet to be announced, but diners can follow the restaurant’s profile for upcoming details.

The Houston truck will be the second expansion for Trap Kitchen. Owners Malachi Jenkins and Roberto Smith added a Portland truck to their fleet in 2018. In 2016, Eater LA called Trap Kitchen original location Compton’s “favorite secret restaurant.”

In an interview with LAWeekly, Jenkins said he specifically wanted to bring the truck to Black communities in both Compton and Portland that had little access to fresh food, which could be a hint as to where the Houston truck will eventually be stationed.
