Saigon House, the beloved Viet-Cajun restaurant known for its “H-town Bang” crawfish and Viet-Tex brisket pho, has now gone mobile.

The restaurant launched a food truck this weekend at 2310 Decatur, just between Washington Avenue and Memorial Drive. The food truck brings Saigon House back to Central Houston after a move outside the Beltway earlier this year.

The restaurant, which originally opened in Midtown, closed its first location in September 2019 — initially for renovations, but that closure later became permanent. Meanwhile, a second location at 3645 FM 1960 West was already in the works. That location opened quietly in May. In the interim, Saigon House chef Tony Nguyen was selling his famed crawfish through a private Facebook group.

But now H-Town Bang fans no longer have to lurk an online marketplace to get their crawfish fix. Nguyen has paired up with Chef Matt Mui, former sous chef at Soma Sushi and founder of the Muiishi Makirritos truck, to launch the Saigon House Food Truck. This past weekend the truck served up dumplings; loaded fries; “SLAB Rice,” a dish of shrimp, fried rice and sausage; and California-sourced crawfish since Gulf Coast mudbugs are currently out of season.

Meanwhile, Nguyen has been busy elsewhere. He’s working with MasterChef winner and longtime Houston chef Christine Ha on her new restaurant Xin Chao, set to open any time now at 2310 Decatur, the spot perhaps best known as the original location of Beaver’s. He also helped create the menu for Kamp Houston, a project from Prospect Park owners Jonathan Reitzell and Mojeed Martins that just opened in the Beaver’s West location at 6025 Westheimer Road. And this past weekend, he was a contestant on The Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay. (The episode airs again a few more times this week for those who missed the original Sunday screening.)

Diners can keep tabs on the Saigon House Food Truck’s menu, hours and location by following the restaurant on Facebook and Instagram.
