The newest bar from soccer star Brian Ching is now serving up more than two dozen brews on tap and eats from beloved Houston food trucks

Football fans have a new spot to watch Dynamo, Dash and Premiere League games on the east side. Soccer player and bar owner Brian Ching’s newest hangout, East End Backyard, has quietly arrived at 1105 Sampson Street.

Ching, who played forward for Houston’s Major League Soccer team The Dynamo for several years, also owns popular EaDo sports bar Pitch 25.

East End Backyard offers plenty of space for sports fans to spread out, including more than 20,000 square feet of outdoor patio, plus a 3,500 square foot dog park. The bar will feature 25 beers and ciders on tap, plus a rotating fleet of food trucks. As Eater reported in 2019, Ching specifically wanted to create an outdoor space for the denizens of the East Side to hang out.

“One of the downsides to a lot of the new townhouses that are being built is that people don’t have any outdoor space for themselves or their pets,” he said. “We wanted to create somewhere in the area people could go to socialize in an affordable, laidback environment, and enjoy the benefits of having a backyard even if they don’t own one themselves. We want this to feel like the biggest backyard in Houston.”

The bar’s NextSeed funding campaign also indicated that East End Backyard would eventually have a community garden, fire pit, and lawn games.

Ching, who was born in Hawaii, first moved to Houston to play for the Dynamo in 2006, and the Bayou City has clearly had an effect on him. After retiring as a player in 2013, he became manager of the National Women’s Soccer League team, the Houston Dash. He stepped down from the Dash in 2019.

In 2018, he opened Pitch 25 to great fanfare. The bar includes a mini indoor soccer pitch, 100 beers on tap, and a full menu of pub food. Since then, Pitch 25 has become a popular spot for watching matches.

Fans can expect more of the same vibe at East End Backyard. Scope out the bar’s brand new website here.
