The new spot will the fill the gap that neighborhood bar Petrol Station left behind

The team behind popular Lindale Park bar Monkey’s Tail is taking over the Oak Forest building formerly occupied by Petrol Station.

The yet-to-be named bar is slated to open later this fall, co-owner Sharif Al-Amin told Eater. Details are still in development, he said, but the newly formed hospitality group Barrel of Monkeys plans to bring creative mixed drinks, food and a breezy neighborhood vibe to the bar, at 985 Wakefield Drive.

“We want it to be an easy-going place, like Monkey’s Tail,” Al-Amin said.

When Monkey’s Tail first opened in Lindale Park a year ago, it was one of a few modern spots for residents of the neighborhood, which has seen recent growth thanks to the northern expansion of Houston’s light rail. The bar quickly became a hotspot thanks to tropical-themed cocktails inspired by co-founder Greg Perez’s Latin heritage, and its reputation as a low key place to watch Astros games.

Similarly, Petrol Station became one of Houston’s earliest destinations for craft beer when it opened in 2005. The building, a former filling station, gave the bar its name, and hop-heads loved to gather in the massive oak tree-lined back yard. The bar closed in March due to the coronavirus in what many viewed as a huge loss for Houston’s beer community.

Though Petrol served only beer and wine, alongside fat burgers, Reubens, and other pub food, the new bar will focus on creative cocktails and unfussy but high quality dishes. Al-Amir said Barrel of Monkeys’ main goal is to recreate the neighborhood vibe that Monkey’s Tail is — and Petrol Station was — known for.

As for opening in the midst of a global pandemic, Monkey’s Tail has found success with takeout cocktails and food to-go. The back patio at the Oak Forest location will be ideal for social distancing and outdoor dining.

“I can’t wait to get my hands on that back yard,” he said.
