Tomorrow, a local organization focused on “food rescue” will partner with the Houston Rockets to fight food insecurity by hosting a free drive-thru meal distribution program at Toyota Center.

The contactless pick-up program will offer take-and-bake dishes prepared by chefs for Houston families in need. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, September 2, and is open to the public.

Several years ago, Houstonian Barbara Bronstein began to notice the amount of food that was wasted at banquets and other social events she was attending in the city. Soon after, she learned about the concept of “food rescue,” the practice of collecting edible food that would have otherwise gone to waste from restaurants, grocers and other food establishments and distributing it to local hunger relief agencies. After finding out that food banks did not accept prepared food, she began to work herself to connect banquet venders and caterers with local soup kitchens. In 2015 she founded Second Servings, the city’s only “only prepared and perishable food rescue organization.”

Food rescue is a two-fold solution — it helps prevent unnecessary food waste while also combating food insecurity

Together, volunteers from the Rockets and Second Servings plan to distribute 3,500 family-sized dinner boxes tomorrow, roughly 28,000 meals, prepared by Hess Corporation’s Food Services Team. They’ll also be handing out donated treats including Girl Scout Cookies and Frito-Lay chips.

Tomorrow’s event is part of a wave of community services announced by the Rockets in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, the team and Harris County officials announced that the Rocket’s stadium, Toyota Center, would serve as an open polling location during November’s local and national elections.

Tomorrow’s meal distribution event will take place at 1317 Austin Street Downtown, from 10 a.m. to noon, or until supplies last.
